An AI SDR is software that does the job a junior Sales Development Representative does at the very top of the funnel: it finds the right person at a company, writes a first email worth reading, follows up politely, reads the reply, and decides whether a human should take over.
The good ones stop there. They do not try to close the deal, negotiate, or pretend to be a person on a call. They do the patient, repetitive work a salesperson hates, and they get out of the way the moment a real conversation starts.
What a good AI SDR actually does
- Finds the contact. You give it a company; it works out who to talk to and verifies the email address before anything is sent.
- Writes a considered first email. Not a mail-merge template with a first name slotted in, but a short, specific message informed by research on that company.
- Sends at a human pace. From your own mailbox, inside your working hours, a few minutes apart. No 500-at-midnight blasts.
- Reads every reply. This is the half most tools skip. A reply gets read, scored for genuine interest, and routed: hot leads to a human, “not interested” to a permanent do-not-contact list, anything ambiguous to a review queue.
What an AI SDR should never do
- Guess when it is not sure. Ambiguity should go to a human, not a coin flip.
- Send from a shared or rented domain that puts your reputation in someone else’s hands.
- Answer legal, procurement, or compliance questions on its own.
